Visual communication, theme music, living talk…

One picture can present more than a thousand conscious or unconscious, also false, impressions, which makes dealing with images very fascinating.
I have lead design processes as a project manager. I have designed and briefed marketing materials and corporate identity visuals (posters, brochures, book and magazine covers, logos, etc.) as well as multitasking on projects for the internet and television.
I have published numerous images and texts when working as a journalist and designer for old and new media, television, magazines, books, and the web.
In these portfolios you can have a glimpse of some of my projects.

Books
My major post graduate publication is titled Mapping Many Voices: A Platform for Dialogue, (Pasi Karhu, Mia Marttiini, Mikko Myllykoski, September 2007), Visitor Voices in Museum Exhibitions. It was published by Association of Science-Technology Centers, Washington, DC.

Graphic Design
In my early career I worked in advertising, marketing and graphic design for ten years, creating everything from Winnie the Pooh Pyjamas; Maija Mehiläinen [Die Biene Maja] Logo; printing by hand for Pink Panther comics [Vaaleanpunainen Pantteri salapoliisina: Lumimiehen arvoitus ja Pyramidin Salaisuus] and several BABAR books; designed printed materials for Helsinki Festival, etc.
I designed the covers for Ratkes journal for six years. Ratkes is a Finnish association for solution focused and resource oriented methods. Members are representing professionals united by the idea of working in brief, appreciative, collaborating and resource oriented ways in the field of therapy, training and organization development. Ratkes is publishing a journal called… Ratkes. It´s an innovative and open forum for living talk.

Photo and Illustration
I was happy to be the photographer on Värttinä’s Canadian Tour on 2006, when they had their “THE LORD OF THE RINGS” World Premiere; the first major stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic trilogy. See some of my photos of Värttinä in Kola Note, Montreal; and Mod Club, Toronto.
Värttinä is Finland’s most successful contemporary folk music group. Värttinä’s roots are in the Karelia region of Finland, specifically women’s vocal traditions and ancient poems.
Since 1990, Värttinä has toured internationally and built a solid reputation as one the most inventive and uncompromising ensembles in the contemporary world music arena.
You can also see my images on book covers and posters in the Graphic Design -portfolio.

Interactive Information and Web Design
I often work with software developers and web developers to create both the look and feel of web sites or software applications and enhance the interactive experience of the user or web site visitor. Get to know StudioMind’s Matchmaking Machine and Textplorer user interfaces.

Interior Design
I am fascinated by planning spaces and renovations for corporate and private residences. I’ll soon be adding some photos about design for shop interiors and furnishing in Kiseleff House by the Senate Square in Helsinki, in collaboration with interior architect Milla Björk-Vartiainen.

Printed Press
Typically, when writing stories, I find it natural and efficient to both write and take pictures for my stories. As in these examples:
”Phillip Page on a Musical Mission”. SixDegrees [English language magazine]
“Emerging Technologies”. Taloussanomat IT-Week [Financial Newspaper]

TV
When working for MTV3 News Department I designed electronic visual communications, emblems, digital and virtual set designs, identities and animations for hundreds of TV programs (e.g. large-scale live broadcast shows and news, documentaries, current affairs programme 45 Minutes, and Medianews, etc.); and also wrote, edited and directed stories and produced theme musics.
